New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — December 27th, 2016

2016 mercifully comes to a close. While the releases are light, in the spirit of the season most are PWYW.

Official

Bleak House -  Perhaps the most notable character in Ravenloft besides the Dracula clone was the Van Helsing clone, Rudolph Van Richten.  This kills him off. $9.99 and 192 pages.

Ravenloft: Realm of Terror - The original Ravenloft boxed set.  168 pages, $7.99

The Astromundi Cluster - Part of the idea of Spelljammer was to travel from world to world. Well, this product kills that idea, basically keeping the PCs in one giant bottle full of asteroids.  $9.99 and 192 pages

The Legend of Spelljammer - The other part of Spelljammer was a giant spaceship. This details it. Unfortunately, like the above, it trapped the players on it. $9.99 and 192 pages

Adventures

A Very Scary Xmos -  A holiday themed mini-adventure from Creation's Edge Games. 11 pages, PWYW

Rules

Krampus, The Christmas Demon -  Pretty much as the title says. 4 pages, PWYW

The Anatomist - Medical themed class for Basic D&D. 7 pages, PWYW

Misc

Friday Freebie 12-23-16 -  Looks like the corner of a larger dungeon. $1 for the enhanced version.

RIP Vesna Vulovic

One of the more controversial things about AD&D, at least in the pages of Dragon and other venues, was the falling damage system, of 1d6 for every 10' fallen, capping out at 20d6. It was seen as too lenient, letting high level characters escape certain death (in the form of a monster or whatever) by leaping off a cliff, which could potentially be more survivable.

After lots of complaints, it was changed so it was cumulative, 1d6 for 10', 2d6 +1d6 for 20', 3d6 +2d6 +1d6 for 30' and so on

But in real life, falling isn't always so fatal. The late Vesna Vulvic was the record holder for the greatest distance fallen and surviving, a whopping 33,000' out of an airplane that blew up back in 1972.

Clearly she was a 20th level Stewardess.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — December 20th, 2016

Ho ho ho! Almost Christmas time. Or for that matter, the solstice and we start getting more light. December and January always make me feel like a Drow.

Official

In the Phantom's Wake -  Last Thunder Rift adventure for Basic D&D, written by TSR's worst (IMHO) author (IMHO). 16 pages, $4.99

OA6 Ronin Challenge -  Much more dangerous than the Pepsi Challenge. 96 pages, $4.99

OA7 Test of the Samurai -  Big adventure, 96 pages, $4.99

PC4 Night Howlers -  Race as class can either be a strength or weakness, giving options but eventually becoming unwieldy with so many classes. This is the last of the Creature Crucible books, letting you play Lycanthropes (at least if your DM agrees). $4.99, 96 pages.

Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II - Seems to be mostly for the video game.  $4.99 and 128 pages.

Adventures

Secrets of the Wyrwoode -  From frequently used OSR artist Luigi Castellani comes this site based exploration adventure for OSRIC, levels 5 to 7. 45 pages and $6.

A fair amount of his work has been released into the public domain via Kevin Crawford's Kickstarters and a good way to thank Mr. Castellani for going along that would be buying this.

Rules

Gramma World -  Sometimes typos can be fun, as that was apparently the genesis for this game, about elderly people, either solving mysteries or surviving in a post apocalypse world, it's not clear which. 80 pages, $4.45

Labyrinth Lord, Spanish Version - This is a bit odd, given that we had a really nice Spanish retroclone (Adventures in the East Mark) translated into English, I guess it's fair play to do the reverse.  208 pages and $15.92, probably evenly priced in pesos.

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced 12-16-16 -  I'm not sure what you'd call it, though it's part dungeon, part cave. $1 for enhanced version, free version free (duh)

Monday, December 19, 2016

Mjolnir OSR Fanzine available in English

Apparently this was an old Swedish fanzine back in the day, but recently revived in both Swedish and English. I guess Issue 7 came out earlier in the year, but issue 8 seems to be new (at least I got an email about it)

Anyway, check it out, it's free and looks very cool, very White Dwarfish, before they went house magazine.

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — December 13th, 2016

Woof, this is a very busy week. I think cold weather motivates people to stay in and write/game.

Most notably some modules from new comers, Starlight Games and The Scribes of Sparn

Official

Caravans -  Al Qadim adventure or something. $7.99, 104 pages

Cities of Bone - This is a pretty decent sourcebook/adventure book for Al Qadim. 110 pages, $4.99

Naval Battle Rules: The Seas of Cerillia - I was meh on 2e, but I really liked Birthright. This is the sea combat supplement for it. It uses cards, so I'm not sure how this product will work. 45 pages, $4.99

Netheril: Empire of Magic -  Some Forgotten Realms sourcebook. $9.99, 160 pages.

Prayers from the Faithful - As if 2e clerics (er, priests) were poweful enough, there's this FR sourcebook. 128 pages, $9.99

Ruins of Undermountain II: Deep Level Boogaloo - I never got Undermountain, it was like 90% geomorph and 10% dungeon. 160 pages, $9.99

Adventures

Ancalla: The Broken Towers -  More a setting than adventure, this is for Godbound. 83 pages, $9.99 and apparently in various different formats besides PDF.

Arsenal of the Warrior Princess - This is an OSR adventure (specifically B/X) from newcomer Starlight Games for levels 4-5. $1.99 and 21 pages

Bell, Book, and Candle - Mini-dungeon from Creations Edge Games for Sword & Wizardry characters level 4-6.  10 pages, $1.50

TG1 Lost Temple of Iblotheg - S&W version of a multi-system module from Cut to the Chase games. Hope this one actually has descriptions of the monsters and not just names/stats, their previous module I own had a bunch of new ones that I knew nothing about. 32 pages plus maps, $4.99

The Kringle Castle Invaders - Apparently Santa Claus's castle has been invaded and the PCs (levels 2-4) must save him. $5.75 and 52 pages which seems a bit pricey, but it looks like it has a lot of art.

The Oddboxx of Zoforon -  This has a pretty long backstory, too long to recap here. But it's for levels 5-7. 32 pages, and $5.75

Rules

White Box Compendium -  Because you apparently can't ever have enough rules for White Box. 50 pages, $4.99

White Box Gothic - See above. $4.99 and 50 pages.

Misc

Blood & Treasure 2nd Edition Screen -  6 pages, $1.99

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map 12-09-2016 -  This week's map is pretty neat, a map of city blocks. $1 for the enhanced version.

The Wizard's Scroll Issue 1 - New S&W 'zine with a lot of different authors and artists. Very reasonably priced at $1.99 and 50 pages

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — December 6th, 2016

This is a pretty busy week and I've got a cold.

Official

Dwarven Kingdoms of Krynn -  Only ones I remember from Dragonlance were the gully dwarves. But apparently there were more, 192 pages worth. $9.99

FR7 Hall of Heroes -  Stats from NPCs from early Forgotten Realms novels (before they got too awful). 128 pages, $9.99

PG1 Players Guide to the Dragonlance Campaign - I'm sure someone, somewhere played in the Dragonlance setting rather than read the books, but I sure didn't.  $4.99, 128 pages

Tales of the Lance - This is the boxed set for the 2e version of the Dragonlance setting. $9.99 and 208 pages.

Time of the Dragon - I have no idea what this is, except it's another boxed set for Dragonlance, but very early in 2e's life.  184 pages and $9.99

Adventures

Blood in the Chocolate -  Low level adventure for Lamentations of the Flame Princess. From the description, sounds like a "Screw you" adventure. 55 pages, $7.99

Broodmother Sky Fortress - This seems to be a real adventure for Lamenations of the Flame Princess (not a "screw you" or a "wah wah I'm so pretentious and depressed" pity party involving a weird sky castle. 173 pages, $9.99

Lairs & Encounters -  For Adventurer, Conqueror, King System comes this adventure supplement devoted to monster lairs and includes rules for making monsters (but isn't the point of OSR that you don't need rules like that? That's what turned me off 3e, you need an accounting degree to make new monsters).  $10 for 229 pages

OWB007: Attack on Hilo Ahu Beach -  Just in time for Pearl Harbor Day, I guess, comes this WW2 adventure for Operation White Box/ PWYW and 19 pages.

The Last Snipe Hunt - Short adventure for White Star. 14 pages, $1.50

Rules

Guns of War -  Rules for early style gunpowder for ACKS and other OSR games. $5, 58 pages and no idea if it includes rules for walking hippos.

Mazes & Perils: The Charlatan -  New class for the Holmes-ish game. $1.99 and 9 pages.

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map -  This week looks like it's a wizard's lair. $1 for the enhanced version.

Mazes & Perils: Christmas Bundle - Seems to have every official product which is just the deluxe rules, twos adventure and a few new classes. $10.38 which is a pretty good eal (like 60% off)

New OSR Products at

Almost forgot, distracted by the $1 Out of the Park Baseball in the Humble Bundle

But anyway, we've got a couple of adventures this week and a couple of fanzines.

Official

Elminster's Ecologies Appendix 1 :The Battle of Bones and Hill of Lost Souls -  One of the things I got tired of in 2e was Elinister and the heavy detail in monsters and their "ecology". It's a monster. Kill it. Or talk to it. But does what it eats really matter? This is more of a locale/adventure setting though.  72 pages, $4.99

Elinster's Ecologies Appendix 2: The High Moor and The Serpent Hills - 72 pages, $4.99

MC3 Monstrous Compendium Forgotten Realms Appendix - I know, some people love the detail, but to me it seemed a way to sell a product with a lot of filler. 64 pages, $4.99

MC11 Monstrous Compendium Forgotten Realms Appendix -  More monsters, 64 pages, $4.99

Adventures

Automata Run Amok -  OSRIC (remember that system? Nice to see someone did) adventure set in a wizard's tower with well, automata run amok.  21 pages and PWYW

Treasures of Lutello -  Another short Swords & Wizardry dungeon from Creation's Edge, this time set in a Jester's crypt. $1.50, 14 pages.

Misc

Black Pudding #1 - Fanzine from J.V. West who produced a couple of nice OSR adventures (Howler and something in the Ice). New classes, some mini-dungeons. 24 pages, PWYW.

Wormskin Issue 4 - I stopped following Necrotic Gnome's blog when he switched to 5e, . Dunno if he's back to OSR or just slumming. 67 pages, $3.49

New OSR Prodcuts at RPGNOW/DTRPG — November 22nd, 2016

Apparently I missed the latest OSR game from Goblinoid Games, Apes Victorius, about roleplaying in a Planet of the Apes style setting. Oook.

Official

Four from Cormyr -  This country in the Forgotten Realms always annoyed me. But anyway, this has 4 adventures set in it for people who liked it.. 128 pages and $4.99

FMA2: Endless Armies - An adventure set in Maztica, the Forgotten Realms version of Mesoamerica.  $4.99, 32 pages.

FRM1: The Jungles of Chult -  Forgotten Realms sourcebook about a region I've never heard of (not a big FR fan). 64 pages, $4.99

Heroes Lorebook - The Forgotten Realms has a lot of novels (most of which are pretty bad, though I did like the Azure Bonds ones). This has stats for characters in them up to 1996. $7.99, 160 pages.

The North: Guide to the Savage Frontier - This is most notable to me as the setting for the last two Gold Box AD&D games from SSI. 192 pages, $9.99

TM4: The City of Waterdeep - This is just a really, really big map of said city. $4.99

Adventures

OWB006: The Liberation of Guerrierville -  Adventure for Operation White Box, the WW2 OSR game. 25 pages, $3.99

Misc

Friday Freebie Map 11/18/16 -

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — November 15th, 2016

Woof, actually have a new adventure this week and Bruce Heard's second Calidar product.

Official

Den of Thieves - 2e sourcebook about thieves. $4.99 and 96 pages.

Maztica -  The Forgotten Realms version of Mesoamerica, completely with conquistadors. $9.99 and 192 pages.

The Knight of Newts - Basic adventure set in Thunder Rift.  16 pages, $4.99

Rage of the Rakasta - Another basic adventure in Thunder Rift, this featuring cat men (not like the evil spirit cats from AD&D, more actual cap people). 16 pages, $4.99

Adventures

The Devil in the Crypt -  Seems to be a horror/sword & sorcery style module. $3 and 18 pages. Also seems to be a Scandinavian version

Rules

Basic Back to the Dungeon GM's Guide. PWYW version of the OSR game from that guy from Dragonsfoot whose name I can't remember at the moment.

Basic Back to the Dungeon Player's Guide. PWYW

Basic Back to the Dungeon Survival Sheet  - Seems to be some sort of form.

The Witch for Swords & Wizardry Light -  From the guy who really, really likes witches. PWYW.

Misc

Calidar - Beyond the Skies -  The second product in Bruce Heard's (aka Mr. Mystara) new setting, Calidar, inspired by the Princess Ark stuff. System neutral. $19.95 and 248 pages.

Friday Freebie 11-11-16 -  Another nice map from Tim Hartin. $1 for the enhanced version.

Skinner Games - OSR Tiles - Some sort of map tiles, obviously. Not sure what you use them for. $2

New OSR Bundle at Bundle of Holding

It has some pretty good stuff

For $8.95 you get

  • Deep Carbon Observatory
  • The Pod Caverns of the Sinister Shroom
  • Castle Gargantua
  • Mad Monks of Kwantoom
  • One-Page Dungeon Compendia 2013-2015
  • 2014 Dodecahedron Cartographic Review

I think the One Page Dungeon Compendium is actually free. But Kwantoom is good and so is the Pod Caverns. The rest aren't really to my test, Gargantua is a tryhard grimark version of Kwantoom and DCO is just baffling.

For $20.54 you also get

  • Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls
  • Dwimmermount
  • Yoon-suin
  • Misty Isles of the Eld
  • Chthonic Codex
  • Tunnels & Trolls: Goblin Lake
  • 2015 Dodecahedron Cartographic Review
Most of those are good. I am still bitter over the never materialized T&T game for the Colecovision (they got as far as the title screen)

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — November 8th, 2016

Woof. Not too busy a week.

Official

Sword & Shield -  Beginner adventure for basic from the latter days of TSR.  You can really tell a difference between the old starter adventures, where they assumed kids were reasonably bright if still kids and this, which assumes they are idiots. 16 pages, $4.99

The History of Dragonlance - It's amazing how far Dragonlance fell, from being a top seller and having fluff products like this to being nothing. $9.99 and 252 pages

WG11 Puppets -  Apparently an adaption of a RPGA module, involving leprechauns. $4.99, 32 pages.

WG12 Vale of the Mage -  To me, this was one of the big mysteries of Greyhawk. Just who was this guy and his valley elves? Well, we never got a real answer from EGG, but TSR came out with this which was kinda meh.  $4.99, 64

Adventures

Italian version of the Shrine of St. Aleena -  Homage to the late great star of Mentzer Basic. $4.95 and 37 pages.

Rules

The Nightmares Underneath -  This seems to be a free edition of a OSR horror game from Red Box Vancouver. 333 pages and er, free.

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map 11-04-16 - This looks like an underground temple with a cave complex. $1 for the enhanced version

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — November 1st, 2016

OSR goes WW2 this week with Operation White Box from Small Niche Games.

Official

Marco Volo: Arrival -  He was like a travel guide writer to the Forgotten Realms, and apparently for some reason, they made a trilogy of adventures about him. This is the last.. 32 pages, $4.99

Marco Volo: Departure - This is the last of the trilogy. 32 pages, $4.99

Marco Volo: Journey - This is the middle of the trilogy, where apparently he travels to the modern world and becomes a roadie for a rock band and even cuts an album with Neal Schon (who BTW also made albums with Sammy Hagar and Jan Hammer). 32 pages, $4.99

X13 Crown of Ancient Glory - The last of the eXpert adventures for Basic D&D. 32 pages, $4.99. RIP

Adventures

OWB 002: Norway Ablaze -  Contains 3 short adventures for the new WW2 OSR game from Small Niche Games (see below). 40 pages, $3.99

OWB 003: Desert Raiders of WW2 - : 3 short adventures set in North Africa. 39 pages, $3.99

The Ytroth Larvae of the Scarsea Cliff - Actually a systemless adventure, but I liked the name. Seems remarkably short though, 2 pages for $1.

Rules

Operation White Box -  The idea of mixing OD&D and WW2 goes back to The Strategic Review. While I would argue that that 4 page article was enough you needed, if you want a more comprehensive coverage, here you go. 183 pages, $7.99

I think the author, Peter Spahn, is the 2nd hardest working author in the OSR after John Stater.  I just wish he picked a less pretentious and better rules system to base his stuff on than White Box...

Misc

Maze Rats - This is a combination rules system (not OSR) and table for generating stuff (which is sorta OSR). PWYW and 13 pages. (And holy crud, it's got an average contribution of $3.61 and is a copper seller. I don't get it)

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map 10-23 = This one looks like a wizard's lair. $1 for the enhanced version.

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — October 25th, 2016

A rather slow week.

One interesting item is the Legend Quest Omnibus, which is apparently a compilation of all the books for a 1980s RPG that got decent reviews in Dragon (I think). However, at $30, I'm not that curious.

Official

I3-5 Desert of Desolation - Compilation of the I3-5 modules from the Hickmans, not set in the Forgotten Realms.  I love Ancient Egypt, but these didn't do much for me. $9.99 and 128 pages

PC3 Creature Crucible: The Sea People -  Racial classes for basic D&D for all sorts of underwater races.  $4.99 and 96 pages.

REF3: The Book of Lairs - Basically a bunch of short encounters. $4.99 and 96 pages.

REF4: The Book of Lairs II: Electric Bugbear - More of the above. $4.99 and 96 pages.

Adventures

Dark Colony - Big sci-fi horror adventure from Eldritch Enterprises - aka Jim Ward and Timothy Kask. Uses their generic (and really crappy) stat system, but it's not too hard to convert to D&D/Gamma World/MA/OSR. 123 pages and only $6.

Rules

Sexbots -  For one of the more overlooked OSR Sci-Fi games, Machinations of the Space Princess (which is close to being Lamentations of the Flame Princess in space, but actually good). Seemed to be completely forgotten until this popped up, though it hardly qualifies as a major product. 18 pages, .89 cents

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map 10-21-16  This is a very interesting map that features cros-over tunnels. $1 for the enhanced version

Poetry Book by Clark Ashton Smith on Gutenberg

I always thought Clark Ashton Smith was unfairly omitted from Appendix N. He gave D&D the Geas spell and his Zothique stories essentially gave rise to the language and themes of Jack Vance's Dying Earth tales.

But before he wrote short stories, he wrote poetry, another volume of which, Ebony & Crystal is now available on Gutenberg (along with The Star Treader)

Personally, I don't really like poetry (though I did like Data's poem about his cat). But still, worth a look, I think.

RIP Jack Chick

Okay, to be honest, I didn't realize he was still alive until I read the mention of his death.

But it's funny how much flak/mockery he still got, while others from that era, like say Tom Hanks or certain politicians escape any sort of repercussions from their attacking D&D (which AFAIK, they haven't retracted)

Saturday, October 22, 2016

Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea 2nd Edition now on Kickstarter

And already funded!

Seems to basically be more of the same - more classes, more artwork, though that seems to be a step back from the artwork of the original, going with a more comic book look. (Though at least it's an old school comic book look, not the crappy art comics have nowadays)

Anyway, $15 for the PDF and $59 for the hardback book (and map).

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — October 18th, 2016

Not too busy this week. While not my cup of tea, there's a bunch of Arduin stuff listed

Official

HWQ1 The Milenian Scepter -  Pretty good basic adventure set in the Greek/Roman themed Milenian empire. $4.99, 64 pages

Kara-Tur The Eastern Realms -  The boxed set for the setting for 1e's Oriental Adventures, possibly meant for Greyhawk, but ended up in the Forgotten Realms.  192 pages, $4.99

MC14 Fiend Folio - 2e coverage of the monsters from Fiend Folio, at least the ones not covered earlier.  $4.99, 64 pages.

The Magic Encyclopedia Volume II - The second part of the listing of all the magic items in TSR D&D. $4.99 and probably only about 90 pages (it says 155, but that's because the page number starts at 74)

Adventures

Maze of the Blue Medusa -  The dungeon (not a megadungeon in my opinion, only about 300 rooms) from Zak S makes an appearance on DTRPG. 288 pages and $5, or $10 for the bookmarked version

It's a remarkable product and definitely designed to be played, but honestly, it's a really high brow product, meant for people who are into modern art and such.

Ten Buried Blades - An adventure for Godbound. $4.99 and 56 pages.

Misc

Enhanced Friday Freebie Map - $1

Nod 30 - While the possible exception of Michael Curtis, I think John Stater is the most prolific OSR author, somewhat unheralded at that.  His 'zine content alone outstrips virtually anyone else. 50 pages, $3.99

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — October 11th, 2016

Almost to the Ides of October. Not too busy this week, most notably the new version of Crypts & Things

Official

DDA4 The Dymrak Dread -  I know absolutely nothing about this latter day basic module. By John Nephew, who is probably my least favorite RPG author (in terms of product quality). TSR loved him though, he seemingly had dozens of bad adventures in Dungeon. 16 pages, $4.99.

Quest for the Silver Sword - Another last days of basic module that I know nothing about. Apparently it's set in Thunder Rift. 16 pages, $4.99

Adventures

AW1 The Hills of Death - Looks like a wilderness adventure. 20 pages, $2

AW2 Sloven Hills -  Details the lands of a witch queen, easily my favorite kind of queen (well, besides the band). 12 pages, $1.20

Rules

Advanced Mutant Companion -  Bunch of new stuff for Mutant Future, the vaguely Gamma Worldish OSR Game. New mutations, new races, and other stuff.  $2 and 39 pages.

Crypts & Things Remastered -  One of the best OSR games gets a new version with more content - specifically more classes, more world info, and some sample adventures.  $13 and 247 pages.

Dungeon Questing New Races Volume 2 - Apparently for a specific OSR game that I've missed (or forgotten), this has 6 races - Minotaur, Rat, Bird, Golem, Lizard, and Centaur. 18 pages, $1

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map - Another enhanced map from Paratime Design. $1

Against the Goblins Review — Not Your Usual Goblins

Mathew E. Kline and Creation's Edge Games (which I guess is just him) have put out several mini modules in the "Dungeons of Dazegoneby" line for Swords & Wizardry and a similar line for White Star. I quite like them, as they are short, but not too short, and reasonably priced. Not to mention competently done and a great example of how you can put together a quality product using stock art and maps. Unlike his previous modules, A1 Against the Goblins is actually a full sized adventure, weighing in at 65 pages and a slightly higher price tag (though still very reasonable) of $5.

In essence though, it's really close to being three different modules with a connected plot (not unlike G1-3 Against the Giants, which I always want to type when writing the title of this). Basically the PCs must save a village from three different tribes of goblins, each with their own special ability imbued by a magical device called a chaos stone. One tribe can spew flame, another is plague-ridden, and the third can raise dead, at least zombies.

New OSR Titles at DTRPG/RPGNow — October 4th, 2016

Another quiet week on the OSR front.

In the spirit of Halloween, I started working on the second floor of my dungeon, The Charnel Pits of Reynaldo Lazendry, loosely inspired by Re-Animator and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. It's always surprisingly hard to translate a dungeon from notes into a module. Some rooms are just vague scribbles. Sometimes you see what you've written and think "That doesn't make sense" and then you likely want to change the things that the players didn't like.

Also, why is "charnel" not in any spellchecker? I keep thinking I spelled it wrong, but nope, it's just not in there.

Official

HWA1 Nightwail -  Somewhat strangely, the Hollow World was my introduction to Mystara. I had picked up the boxed set for cheap and really liked it. There weren't all too many adventures set there, this is the first of a trilogy, which I can't remember much about (which says how meh it was). $4.99 and 64 pages.

HWA2 Nightrage - Sequel to the above. Set in psuedo Egypt and pseudo Meso-America. $4.99 and 64 pages.

HWR2 Sons of Azca - This is a sourcebook detailing the Hollow World's pseudo Meso-America. 96 pages pages, $4.99

HWR3 The Milenian Empire - This is sort of a combination of Greece under Alexander and to a  lesser extent, Rome. 96 pages, $4.99

Adventures

None

Rules

Mazes & Perils: The Holy Knight -  New class for Mazes & Perils, the Holmes inspired game. $1.99 and 10 pages.

Misc

D100 Minor Magic Items - 5 pages of minor magic items from 3 Toadstools.

Friday Freebie - Neat amp of an underground temple. $1 for the enhanced version.

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — Sept 27th, 2016

Slow week, a couple of monster books

Official

M3 Twilight Calling -  Adventure somewhat ironically by Tom Moldvay for Mentzer's Master Box rules.  $4.99, 32 pages.

M5 Talons of Night - Master level adventure set in the Known World. Don't know much about it, actually. $4.99 and 48 pages

XSOLO Lathan's Gold - Solo adventure (gee, ya think) from Merle Rasmussen. $4.99, 32 pages

XS2 Thunderdelve Mountain - I guess TSR thought the SOLO was too obvious and just went with XS. $4.99 and 40 pages.

Rules

Blood & Treasure Monsters 2nd Edition -  The monster book for the 2nd edition of Blood & Treasure. $9.99 and 216 pages.

Chance Encounters - 26 new monsters for Swords & Wizardry. 20 pages, $2.25

Misc

Axioms Issue 3 - Oops, kind of missed the first two issues, this is the quarterly official magazine for ACKS. This issue seems to be devoted to economics, though really, the game should be called Accounting Conqueror King System. 40 pages, $3.99

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map 9/23/16 - As it says, enhanced version of a free map from Paratime Design. $1

New OSR Titles at DTRPG/RPGNOW — Sept 20th, 2016

I should probably be doing some reviews here, but I've been busy enjoying the last weeks of Summer. Someone has been busy though, being responsible for 8 of the products below.

DDA 3 Eye of Traldar -  One of the last basic D&D adventures, nominally set in Karameikos.  32 pages, $4.99

The Magic Encyclopedia Volume 1 -  Not to be confused with the Encyclopedia Magica, this is a listing of every AD&D magic item, basically just listing the name, gold/xp value and its original source. Useful, but the Encyclopedia Magica has that as well as the actual description of the item. So this is largely a pointless product. $4.99 64 pages.

MC8 Monstrous Compendium Outer Planes -  The return of demons & devils to 2e, albeit under new names.  96 pages, $4.99

OA5 Mad Monkey vs the Dragon Claw - Adventure for Oriental Adventures.  $4.99, 56 pages.

Adventures

BS1 The Little Baroney in the Far Far in the Western Frontier -  The first of many adventures from Eldad of Dragonsfoot, apparently detailing the first floor of a megadungeon called The Black Stairs. 36 pages, $3.50

BS2 The Creeping Shadow of the Witch Queen - Level two of the above dungeon. 36 pages, $3.50

BS3 Drow Unercity of Death -  You probably get this by now. 28 pages, $2.50

BS4 The Drow Sewers - Full of scrubbing driders, I'd guess. 28 pages, $2.50

Too Many Kobolds - Adventure for White Box. 9 pages, $1

Rules

Back to the Dungeon Book 4: Advanced Races & Classes -  Aanother rulebook for Eldad of Dragonsfoot's OSR-ish game. 44 pages, $4

Back to the Dungeon Book 5:Even More Races and Classes - $4, 40 pages.

Back to the Dungeon Book 6: Dungeon Arcana - This seems to be GM tips, though possibly a rant based on the large text in the product description.  $2.50, 28 pages.

Back to the Dungeon Book 7: Dungeon Alchemy -  Yet another rulebook for Eldad of Dragonsfoot's OSR-ish game. 24 pages, $2

Misc

D100 Things Overheard in a Tavern - From the good proprietor of the 3 Toadstools Blog comes this handy idea generating product. 4 pages, PWYW

Dungeons in Blue Expansion Triple Pack Five -  Old school blue maps. $8.79

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map - Enhanced version of a free map from Paratime Design. $1.

Swords of Kos Fantasy Setting - From Skirmisher Publishing comes this large setting book which was partly developed through old school D&D. 360 pages, and $35.99. I like some of their stuff, but not nearly $40 worth.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — September 13th, 2016

Fairly busy week.

Not OSR, but I am partial to the old gamebooks (A couple months ago when my internet was down, I played a bunch of the old Fighting Fantasy ones), so check out The Dungeon of Abkadev, a PWYW gamebook.

Official

FRC1 Ruins of Adventure -  This is one of my favorites. It's an adaption of the first SSI Gold Box computer game, Pool of Radiance. Although it follows the same basic premise and uses the same maps, much of the details are different and changed for better play at the table. It's really basically a sandbox - the PCs are left to their own devices to explore and help restore a ruined city. 96 pages, $4.99

WG8 The Fate of Istus - This large Greyhawk adventure was meant to change your campaign from 1st edition to 2nd edition. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it has a few nice bits, like describing some of the cities. $4.99, 128 pages.

WG10 Child's Play -  This is a 2e introductory adventure (though somehow meant for high level characters) that showed that post Gygax TSR had no idea what to do with Greyhawk, as this is Greyhawk in product name, but not actually in Greyhawk. 32 pages, $4.99

Adventures

The Curse of Harken Hall -  A first level OSRIC adventure, the players are hired to investigate a secret door in a manor. $5.45 (I'm guessing this makes more sense in a different currency, probably pounds given the author is named Simon which is perhaps the most common English name besides Ian and possibly Nigel) and 35 pages

Necromancer's Bane - The sequel to the above (which is why I didn't put it first) meant for 2nd to 5th level characters and more of a dungeon crawl. 57 pages, $5.45.

The Tales of Highguard Cliff  - More an adventure setting than adventure, but meant to provide background for The Curse of Harken Hall. 73 pages, $5.45

Rules

Back to the Dungeon Book 1 Races and Classes -  I'm not sure this is really OSR in my point of view (as it's not particularly close to TSR era D&D), but the guy has been working on it for years over at Dragonsfoot. $2, 44 pages

Back to the Dungeon Book 2 Monsters and Traps -  See above. 44 pages, $4

Back to the Dungeon Book 3 Games Master's Guide to the Ancient World - This seems to be more about GMing than a description of a world. 44 pages, $4.

Misc

Enhanced Friday Freebie - Improved version of one of Paratime Design's free maps. $1

Lamentations of the Fire Princess Everything Bundle -  For $168, you get pretty much everything. Personally, I'd rather have the money. I bought most of it back during their $1 a product sale. Most of the stuff just isn't very good, more pretentious than anything else. Maybe if you like masochist players who like getting railroaded. A few exceptions though, like World of the Lost (though even that traps the PCs)

Hobgoblin Lair - Nice 2 pages map of a hobgoblin lair. $3

OSR NPC Generator Cards - Because dice are apparently just so hard. $5, 22 pages

White Box Character Sheet - Free character sheet for S&W White Box. But wait, doesn't the very concept of character sheets go against the White Box school philosophy?

White Box Referee Screen - See above. PWYW.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — September 6th, 2016

I really don't know what day of the week to do this. Originally I picked Saturday which seems to make sense since it was the last day of the week, then Sunday because sometimes I was busy on Saturday night, then Monday because that's when my internet started working again and when WOTC uploads the new official stuff, but then they sometimes do it late on Monday so I'd have to go back and edit it in. Blargh.

Official

Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (1e) -  I'm not a big FR fan, but the early versions were undoubtedly the best. $9.99 and lots and 192 pages plus maps.

M2 Vengeance of Alphaks - He was sort of the villain in the backstory to the magical empire of Alphatia in Mystara. Well, he's back and wants vengeance in this Master level (28-36) module. 32 pages, $4.99

REF5 Lords of Darkness (1e) - Adventure anthology set in the Forgotten Realms involving Undead. $4.99 and 96 pages.

Adventures

Villains of the Undercity -  A new Maximum Mayhem Dungeon. These really sum up the early gonzo style of D&D that some try to evoke and fail. Not cheap though at $10 and 36 pages.

Rules

d30 Random Tavern Generator -  If there is one thing that pisses me off more about the OSR than the single saving throw, it's the d30. PWYW.

Misc

Hobgoblin Lair - 2 pages map meant to represent a hobgoblin lair. $3.

Enhanced Friday Freebie Map - More of these from Paratime Design or $1

Stock Art Dungeons Map 1 - The Catacombs - While not as good as the above Paratime Design maps above, this has the benefit of having a commercial license, so you can use it in a product. And $2.99, it's cheap enough that your miodule you might just break even.

Stock Art Dungeons Map 2 - Electric Boogaloo Caverns - I can draw passable dungeons, since I can just copy and past rooms and corridors. Caverns and caves are beyond my skill. So this is nice. $2.99.

Stock Art Dungeons Map 3 - The Fortress - As above, but a fort.  $2.99

Stock Art Dungeons Map 4 - The Secret Grove - As above. Hopefully no one makes a module based on Nancy Friday's books, who was 50 Shades of Grey back in the 1980s. Only much grosser. $2.99

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — August 29th, 2016

Hmmm, fairly busy week. Some adventures, some sourcebooks, some new rules.

Official

DDA1 - Arena of Thaytis -  Basic adventure set in the Roman like country of the Known World (more later Rome). $4.99, 32 pages.

DM Options - High Level Campaigns -  One of the so called 2.5E books, these made the game more complicated, arguably more than 3e. 192 pages and $9.99

H3 Bloodstone Wars -  Crazy high level adventure. 39 pages, $4.99

Adventures

The Cursed Fountain - Looks like it's the start of a new series of mini-modules from Creation's Edge Games for S&W. For levels 1-3 and 10 pages. $1.50

The Howling Mines of Khegek - Low level adventure for the Holmes inspired game Mazes & Perils. 21 pages, $3.99

Waybury U - Free system agnostic adventure (though seems to assume character classes, so D&D)

Rules

Crying Blades Volume 1 -  Claims to be OSR anyway, not sure of the specific differences from other games. 130 pages, $2.50

Divinities & Cults: Vol 2 - For Labyrinth Lord comes this clerical sourcebook on playing clerics of various Celtic and Roman deities, along with modified casting rules. 53 pages, $4.99

I'm not an expert, but since discovering I'm part Irish I've read a whole lot on Celtic folklore (which I always had an interest in) and they had a lot of gods. Mostly local ones. The ones in this book seem Irish.

Unknown Gods 2016 - The classic supplement is back, apparently now converted to their almost incomprehensible universal rules. $7, 78 pages.

Misc

Hydra Sampler -  The good thing about serving hydra at parties is you never run out.  PWYW sample of the Hydra Collective's stuff. 24 pages.

Some enhanced versions of freebie maps from Paratime Design - $1 each

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — August 22nd, 2016

Fall seems to be arriving early this year, with weather reaching the mid-50s. Hopefully that will be an uptick in products

Official

DA4 The Duchy of Ten -  The last of the Blackmoor modules for BECMI (though there was supposedly a 5th in the works). $4.99, 48 pages and very, very small print

Thunder Rift -  This was  new starter location for use with the BECMI era basic D&D starter set. $4.99, 32 pages

X9 The Savage Coast - From the creator of Top Secret comes this Expert module that is mostly a hexcrawl. $4.99, 32 pages

Adventures

Escape from the Astral Spellhold -  Seems to be a fairly system neutral short adventure for low level parties. Pay What You Want and 16 pages.

Rules

Rabbits and Rangers -  Back before furries there was a brief time where fantasy novels featuring intelligent animals were a thing (Spellsinger and the Greyfax Grimwald books come to mind). This product from J.V. West (who also is a good illustrator) has rules for that for Labyrinth Lord.  82 pages and an astonishingly small price of $2

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced Map - Another enhanced version of one of Paratime Design's freebies. $1

The Undercroft #10 - Fanzine for Lamentations of the Flame Princes. $4.57 and 36 pages.

Mechanized Men of Mars Review

Mechanized Men of Mars is an adventure by Thomas Denmark for Warriors of the Red Planet, an OD&D inspired sword & planet game that I really liked. Unfortunately, Mechanized Men of Mars doesn't live up to that standard.

It sells for $2.99 at DTRPG/RPGNow and is a single column PDF of 32 pages. Seven of those pages are taken up with titles, credits, and legal stuff. Another five pages details the background of the adventure, though it can be summed up as basically a mad scientist who can turn people into machine soldiers has returned from the dead (sort of) and the PCs must stop him.

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — August 15th, 2016

It's been a bit slow this summer, especially in the adventure department, but this week brings 3 new ones.

Official

D&D Immortals Set -  The original version of the Immortals. I have not seen this. I have the revised, Wrath of the Immortals myself. $4.99, 84 pages.

D&D Master Set -  The M in BECMI covers levels 27 to 36 I think. 96 pages, $4.99

Adventures

Temple of the Ape God -  A new module from  some such Scandinavian country, (apparently they had put one out in July that I missed).  Seems to be generic OSR and for levels 2 to 4. 20 pages, $3

The Brigade - A Mazes and Perils Adventure - For the Holmes clone comes this 28 page adventure. Had new monsters (albeit old standard D&D monsters just new to M&P). $3.99

TG0: Depths of the Croaking Grotto -  Cut to the Chase has been pumping out fairly good sized modules regularly (Skull Tower and a series about Kobolds) and this is their latest, presumably the first in a new series. For S&W characters levels 3 to 5. 17 pages and PWYW

Rules

Romance of the Perilous Land -  Somewhat OSR rules set for playing in an Arthurian setting. PWYW and 50 pages. Seems to have quite a bit of stock art in it, so if you like it, might want to chip in (stock art adds up)

White Box Codex Adepts -  A compilation of lotheras.gaiden's classes. 26 of them for $9.99. 37 pages.

Misc

Friday Freebie Enhanced - August 12 - Enhanced version of one of Tim Hartin's freebie maps. $1. He really draws nice dungeons, not so much the art (which I do like) but the design of the dungeon itself.

Friday, August 12, 2016

Teazla's Free D&D Art Repository has a new address

Still at Google, they just changed it.

Doesn't look like anything new, but has a good selection of old (1900-ish) fantasy art and some Elmore portraits from his clip art cd that he graciously allowed to be distributed.

I've used both in my modules.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — August 8th, 2016

Not a very busy week. A number of black hack stuff which I don't consider to be OSR (or very good, for that matter, mostly cash in shovelware)

Official

Basic (Mentzer) D&D -  While perhaps not the best iteration of Basic D&D, it's also perhaps the easiest to learn. 96 pages, $4.99

Companion D&D - This is actually the only D&D (as opposed to AD&D) book I owned back in the day. Rules for levels 15-26, but more importantly/interstingly, rules for running a domain (which AD&D lacked). 96 pages, $4.99

Rules

Bows 1 - ( magic bows. 50 cents, 4 pages

Swords I -  9 magic swords. 99 cents, 4 pages.

White Star is deal of the day at RPGNow/DTRPG

While I don't think it's particularly good.it's a decent sketch of an OSR Sci-Fi game and is on sale for $4.99 at RPGNow and DTRPG

Machinations of the Space Princess is the best OSR Sci-Fi game IMHO, and Starships & Spacemen isn't bad, though I would give the nod to White Star over it.

New OSR Products at DTRPG/RPGNow — July 2016

I know it's been a month, my internet was working only partially. I could not connect to Google or Yahoo or many other sites. I could connect to DTRPG, but not to Facebook which is how I log into DTRPG. And Blogger being run by Google flat out didn't work.

Anyway, to catch up (As it's already long, I'm omitting some of the old school maps I normally cover, sorry)

Official

A Hero's Tale -  Adventure anthology for 2e that I've never heard of. 64 pages, $4.99

A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords -  The last and worst of the Slave Lord modules, where it assumes the PCs lost at the end of A3 and like the villains in all spy movies, they didn't kill the PCs outright but gave them a chance to escape. Oh, and a volcano coincidentally decides to erupt. 28 pages, $4.99

AC10 Bestiary of Dragons and Giants - For Basic D&D comes this monster book. $4.99, 64 pages.

BSOLO Ghost of Lion Castle -  Trying to cash in on the Fighting Fantasy craze, they came up with this from the author of Top Secret. Not a bad module, actually. $4.99, 32 pages.

MC4 Monstrous Compendium Dragonlance - 2e's monster system was cumbersome, but encyclopedic in a way that hasn't ever been really duplicated.  96 pages, $4.99

Vecna Reborn - The legendary evil Lich is back in Ravenloft 2e form.  64 pages, $4.99

Adventures

Advanced Adventures #34: The Crocodile's Tear -  Another adventure in the long line of OSRIC/1E modules. Wilderness adventure for characters of 3rd to 6th level. 12 pages, $7

Adventure Most Fowl -  A starting adventure, the PCs must investigate the theft of some chickens.  48 pages, $2.99. Apparently already a copper seller (which is huge by OSR standards). Go figure. Memo to self - write more adventures about poultry - people like them a lot. (I guess that also explains RuneQuest)

King of Icefang Pass -  A Swords & Wizardry adventure from Creation's Edge Games for characters level 9 to 11. Apparently a new king has taken rulership over a mountain pass and merchants aren't happy.  11 pages, $1.50

KVG002 Shadows Grip -  A mini adventure for Labyrinth Lord, levels 2-3, apparently about a love affair between kobolds and goblins (koblins? gobolds?). 10 pages, $1

Oasis of Koessa - New adventure (or adventure location, really) from Geoffrey O. Dale, who did Inferno for Judges Guild. Uses his own rules but fairly OSR compatible. 55 pages, $3.99.

P1 Black Orc Down - From Pointy Pony Productions comes a PWYW module for BECM D&D. 13 pages.

Rise of the Soggith -  Another mini-adventure for S&W from Creation's Edge Games, also for levels 9 to 11. About piranha men. 11 pages, $1.50

The Folio #8 - First in a new trilogy. 32 pages, $5.99

The Folio #9 - Second in a new trilogy. For 3rd to 5th level characters. 36 pages, $5.99

Rules

Armors 1 - 9 magical suits of armor for S&W. 4 pages, 99 cents

Armors II -  9 magical suits of armor for S&W. 4 pages, 99 cents.

Blood & Treasure 2nd Edition Rulebook -  Blood & Treasure is one of my favorite OSR games and the first one I really played. However, the more I played the more obvious some of the flaws were. I ended up making my own house rules to fix them, but hopefully this addresses them as well. 268 pages, $9.99

Dark Albion: Cults of Chaos -  The original Dark Albion was a very dry and dull re-imagining of the War of Roses as an OSR setting. Hopefully this livens things up. 92 pages, $7.50

Rock Star -  New class for White Star. I will be disappointed if one of the level titles isn't "Veteran Cosmic Rocker". 99 cents, 8 pages.

Shields 1 - 9 magical shields for use with S&W. 4 pages, 99 cents. Apparently duplicates the items in Ivory Relics

Tools of the Worldshapers - Large sourcebook on how to use White Star for all sorts of different Sci-Fi games.  116 pages, $6.99

Misc

Cartomancy 11; Hyperborea -  Nicely done map of Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborea. $1

Civilian Starships - 6 new ships for Stars Without Number. 12 pages, $1.50

Old School Treasures, Level One - If you find rolling on a table too difficult to determine treasure, here's a set of cards to print out. $5.

Free version of Godbound Out

While his games are not quite to my tastes (except Spears of the Dawn), his business practices are probably the best in the industry — having drafts of his Kickstarters written beforehand, releasing art from his Kickstarters into the public domain (and thanks to the artists for that as well). But now he's gone and released a free version of Godbound, his game about playing gods (or really powerful heroes).

Not just a demo, it's 191 pages

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — June 26th, 2016

Kind of a quiet week last week.

Although not old school in the D&D sense, Fighting Fantasy is pretty old school and the Advanced Fighting Fantasy rules have been released in PDF. Kinda pricey at $14

Also have a Sci-Fi version of the rules on Kickstarter. I liked that one starship FF book a lot.

While I hate C&C and don't think it's particularly old school, Luke Gygax apparently did some work on the Undercaverns of Gaxmoor

Official

FRS1 The Dalelands - 2e Sourcebook for the part of the Forgotten Realms into NASCAR. $4.99, 64 pages

World Builder's Guidebook - Remarkably useful book for designing a campaign setting. Nothing mind blowing, but lots of charts and tables. $4.99 and 96 pages.

Adventures

One Page Dungeon Compendium 2015 - While I think the format really kinda sucks for producing usable adventures (reminds me of haikus, too clever for its own good), I seem to be in the minority. PWYW

They Met in a Tavern -  PWYW one-shot adventure with pregens. 18 pages

Misc

Motley Jerks - Free batch of strangely constructed 1e characters.

SL&vl #1 - Seems to be some OSR fanzine in Finnish.  43 pages, PWYW. Strangely, despite clearly being foreign, the suggested price is a $1

Thursday, June 23, 2016

Need some characters? Motley Jerks now available for free

From Chaotic Henchmen Productions comes Motley Jerks, a collection of pre-made characters for 1e/OSRIC for use in tournaments and the like.

Not just the characters, but all the fiddly details, proficiencies, age, spellbooks, languages,

OTOH, need personalities or background? Well, you're outta luck there.

Also curiously, most demi-humans are single-classed. That was something of a rarity in tournament modules (or even just in games), part of the point of demi-humans is they can multi-class (and also because single class thieves just suck)

New OSR Products at RPGNow — June 19th

Last week was quite busy. This week? Not so much, highlight being a huge monster manual from Random Gamers Guild

Official

Greyhawk Wars -  I think this is more a Battle System supplement than anything else. 40 pages, $4.99

H2 and H4 The Mines and Throne of Bloodstone. Crazy high level adventures. $4.99 each

WG9 Gargoyle - Introductory adventure for the post-Gygax Greyhawk. $4.99 and 36 pages

Adventures

None

Rules

Dungeon Questing: Expanding Worlds -  New races (Avian, Golem, Ratling and more) for Dungeon Questing, which is apparently a White Box clone. $1, 19 pages

Dwellers in Dark Places -  This is a rarity, not only is it something for OSRIC, it's a huge product, a giant monster manual containing 340 monsters. $18 and 400 pages and looks like a lot of illustrations.

PC8 - The OSR Amazon Warrior -  This is a fairly straight forward conversion of the 3rd Edition class from Judges Guild back to 1st Edition. PWYW

Truth and Talismans - New Magic Items and a character class for OSR games. $4, 56 pages.

White Box Rogues -  Thief and Assassin class for S&W White Box...why they don't just play S&W Complete is beyond me, but eh. $2.49, 13 pages

Misc

B/X Labyrinth Lord Bestiary 6"x6" Cards (A-J) - Because monster manuals are too hard, I guess. PDF is free, but you can spend $24 to get them in print form

The Hero's Journey Character Sheet - For the retro=clone about playing a 70s Arena Rock band. Free

Warriors of the Red Planet Review — Improves on OD&D

Dungeons & Dragons was firmly rooted in the Barsoom stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs and to a lesser extent, other sword & planet stories. There actually was a game from TSR released during the OD&D era called Warriors of Mars, which was something between a miniatures game and an RPG, but that apparently ran into legal trouble and was pulled from the market.

So sword & planet was mostly ignored (save a few Dragon articles) until Dark Sun came out, a fairly popular setting at least until TSR went under. Unofficially there have been a few attempts to make D&D with the genre. A bootleg version of TSR's Warriors of Mars using more D&Disms by "Doc", an OSR version of Swords of Almuric (based on Robert Howard's novel of the same name), and an appendix in my retro clone. But the most ambitious is these is Warriors of the Red Planet by Al Krombach with Thomas Dennmark doing illustration and layout. It released a while ago on Lulu, but now is out in PDF form, both there and RPGNow/DTRPG/OBS.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — June 12th, 2016

Pretty big week if you like adventures. Which I do.

Official

H1 Bloodstone Pass -  These were the crazy high level (like up to 100) adventures and had a Battle System tie-in. $4.99, 56 pages.

HWA3 Nightstorm - Last module in a trilogy of linked adventures, this is set in an pseudo-India inside the Hollow World. $4.99, 64 pages.

Adventures

A1 A Forgotten Evil -  Mischief Inc is back with another adventure, this time for level 1-3. They've promised to make this more old school than past efforts. 36 pages, $9.99

A1 A Forgotten Evil (Illustration Book) - You'd think $10 would cover illustrations, but apparently not, for $4.99 you get an additional 8 pages illustration book.

F1 The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying (Illustration Book) - Presumably for their first adventure, which came out a couple years ago. $4.99, 8 pages.

Five Lairs -  Another entry in the Five ___ series from Harbinger games. Like it sounds, these are five lairs (very, very small dungeons) you can drop into your game. 26 pages, $2.99. I wonder if they will do Five Liars in honor of the Arduin Guy's mistaking a typo for monsters having a truthfulness rating.

The Mines of Wexham -  I think that was also the name of the annoying kid (er, piglet) on Pigs in Space: The Next Generation. But also it's a dungeon crawl for Z.E.D.  from the old days (so old, the original author is deceased). 19 pages, $3

The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad - An Island Crawl for Swords & Wizardry. 64 pages, $8

Misc

Art of Nod - There are a lot of great things in John Stater's Nod e-zine. I wouldn't say the art was one of those things, but if you disagree with me and want to use some of that art in your projects, here you go. Contains images from issues #27, 28, and 29 and is only $1.99

The Lost Temple of Forgotten Evil Review

The Lost Temple of Forgotten Evil is an adventure from Dark Naga Adventures who seems to be the author, L Kevin Watson, though it's published by Fat Goblin Games. The name is a bit of a mouthful, clearly going for the old school naming method of The _____ (dungeon type) of ______ but perhaps having one too adjective too many. It's actually a dual statted adventure, both for 5th Edition and a generic "OSR" which is clearly AD&D, but possibly more 2e than 1e based on the power level, as the opponents have a lot of hit points. In any event, it's aimed at 4th to 6th level characters.

The Forgotten Evil in question is perhaps not so forgotten to most readers, it's Hastur, of Robert Chambers and H.P. Lovecraft fame. Or perhaps more Hastur as envisioned by August Derleth. Not the surreal, decadent Hastur of Chambers, nor the unspeakable and largely undefined horror of HPL. Instead, it's just a generic cult that grabs people and sacrifices them.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — June 5th, 2016

Quite a busy week with a lot of adventures, 3 from Creations Edge games, one of my favorite module creators.

Official

G3 Hall of the Fire Giant King - Monochrome version of the last Against the Giants adventure. $4.99, 22 pages.

S1 Tomb of Horrors - The classic death trap, though I really don't think it's that hard. Just don't do anything stupid. 36 pages, $4.99

Adventures

Ghosts of Graygrim -  Another mini-dungeon from Creations Edge, this time for level 8-10 characters. 15 pages, $1.50

Guardians: Power of Fear -  Huey Lewis song turned into an adventure for the Guardians OSR superhero game. 48 pages, $3.99

Moganna's Zoo -  Mini-dungeon from Creations Edge games for S&W. For characters 7-9. 14 pages, $1.50

Some Miner Trouble -  White Star adventure for levels 4-6.  14 pages, $1.50

The Curse of the Corpse Candle Cairn - One sheet adventure. $1

Rules

Black Books: Tomes of the Outer Dark -  This is not about the love life of Fonzie, but an OSR Cthulhu game from Simon Washbourne who has done quite a few solid OSR style games.  82 pages, $6

Mazes & Perils: Deluxe Edition - This is a Holmes based game, now in a newer version with more classes and such.  76 pages and a somewhat pricey $7.99

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — May 29th, 2016

Not too busy this week, a couple of LoFP adventures, though one is a re-tread.

G2 The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl -  Monochrome version. 16 pages, $4.99

PC2 Top Ballista - Perhaps the most gonzo (or silly) supplement for D&D, this is about a flying city of gnomes, complete with magical bi-planes. 96 pages, $4.99

S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks - The often imitated, never duplicated idea of a crashed spaceship in a fantasy planet.  68 pages, $4.99

Adventures

England Upturned -  Adventure based on the English Civil War (I guess that's Cromwell vs the Royalty) for Lamentations of the Flame Princess. 132 pages, $7.50

One Page Dungeon - Khem's Order - PWYW One page dungeon which I liked.

The Cursed Chateau -  James Malizewski's (sp) "Screw You" house adventure appropriately converted to Lamentations of the Flame Princess. $7.50. Hope it's better than the old version, though presumably it now has an entry on the random encounter/event table that destroys the universe.

WK3 Revenge of the OverKobold -  Sword & Wizardry version of the third module in the Kobolds series.

Rules

Dueling Rules for Old School Roleplaying Games -  15 pages on dueling for OD&D. Can't you just use the normal combat system and say the hit points are only subduing damage, like in Unearthed Arcana? I guess that's not old school enough.  PWYW at least.

Potions 1 - 9 new potions. 99 cents.

Tabletop Library potentially giving away free stuff to registers users

Tabletop Library is a new-ish publishing platform apparently owned by the S&W Guy. As such, he may be giving away some free items if their most recent Kickstarter (for Bard's Gate, yet another 3e to 5e/PF/S&W conversion) goes well.

Honestly, it's a bid odd, because it's just two maps and an adventure that is currently free on DTRPG, Rogues in Remballo.

But eh, doesn't take much effort to register there.

Khem's Order — New PWYW One Page Dungeon

A lot of them are pretty meh, but I found this one to be pretty neat. It's actually a three level dungeon, about 30 rooms.

At some point though, I think the one page dungeon format gets in the way of being effective. So much information is crammed into such a tiny space that a) it's hard to read and b) just seems pointless, just sticking to a format for the sake of being a gimmick.

Anyway, despite the drawbacks of the format, it's nice adventure. The author is apparently French so there are some oddities in the text, but nothing too bad.

New OSR Products at RPGNow/DTRPG — May 22nd, 2016

Not real busy this week.

Official

MC1 - This is the monster book for 2e. Or one of them. $4.99, 144 pages. I ran 2e some, but I used 1e monsters, which was probably a mistake since 2e ones are often much tougher.

MC2 - The second volume.  Also 144 pages and $4.99

Adventures

The Invasive Invertebrates -  Something from the Frugal GM. PWYW

Rules

The OSR Summoner - Essentially a combination of the Pathfinder class and the 2e's Sha'ir . PWYW or get it here free

The Price of Rebirth -  Rules for returning from the dead for White Box, because I guess going to the Temple of Law isn't old school enough.  $2.99, 15 pages.

Monolith Tower - Neat 7 maps tower by Paratime Design. $5.50
